About this place Pump Room

The Pump Room, on Chicago's North State Street, is a restaurant that gets the job done: good food, comfortable room.

Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten, a James Beard award winner in 2011, put the menu together. He’s a big name for a reason, and the food shows it.

You can get a decent meal here without breaking the bank, which isn't always true for places with a celebrity chef attached. It's a relaxed place, but still feels like a night out. They've also got a history of drawing celebrities, so you might spot someone famous without feeling like you're in a velvet-rope kind of place.

It's also an LGBTQ+-friendly spot, one of many in Chicago's dining scene. Service is professional, and the atmosphere feels genuinely inclusive. Being on North State Street means it’s easy to get to, whether you're heading out for a bigger night or just looking for a reliable dinner.

A surprising hidden gem. I’ve lived here for about four years and this is one of my favorite cocktail lounges/restaurants I’ve been to. Yese made some fantastic espresso martinis and a great French martinis as well. I’d recommend to anyone visiting or any local. Can’t wait to come back!

We paid for 4 seats for a Mother’s Day brunch and the experience was extremely disappointing from start to finish. The reservation was for 10:30 AM, we arrived early at 10:25, yet we were not seated until around 10:50. Despite the delay being on the restaurant’s end, we were still rushed out by noon because our “time was up.” The buffet area was overcrowded and disorganized, with people cutting the line constantly. At one point, a customer was licking his fingers while serving himself in the food line, which was completely unsanitary and unacceptable. Staff did little to manage the situation. To make matters worse, an employee came around checking for balances on prepaid reservations and was reportedly rude while doing so. Even though this was essentially self-serve with almost no actual service provided, staff still pushed for tips. The only decent service we received was from one gentleman who brought coffee and water a couple of times. Overall, the event felt poorly managed, chaotic, unhygienic, and unprofessional — especially for a Mother’s Day brunch that was prepaid and supposed to be a special experience. Definitely not worth the money, and we left extremely disappointed.

This dining experience was incredibly disappointing. I think it is a management issue to only have maximum 3 servers on staff for a barely busy Saturday night. We sat for at least ten minutes without being greeted and then it took at least 20 to wait on drinks and were never served waters which i feel like is standard practice. For how high priced the food was, everything came out cold and took an incredibly long time. Me and my friends spent around 300$, got the steak frites and medallions and all of the food came out cold. My friends ate the food, the flavor was honestly great but why was it cold?! It was not busy for a saturday in retrospect.

Brandon was so great, really made a difference in our night. The lobster mac and cheese was very good.
