DC hotels are expensive. A steady stream of government visitors, tourists, and conference attendees keeps occupancy high, which means rates are elevated for a city its size. If you're visiting, Dupont Circle and Logan Circle are good neighborhoods. Both are on the Metro Red Line, both are walkable for bars, and you can easily wander them during the day.
The U Street/14th Street area is an alternative if you want to be closer to the newer nightlife. It's on the Green and Yellow Metro lines, about 10 minutes from Dupont. This area has good restaurants and feels more like a neighborhood than the hotel-heavy blocks around Dupont Circle.
When to Book Early
Capital Pride in June is the biggest surge. Book at least two or three months ahead if you want Dupont or Logan Circle at decent rates. Black Pride DC, over Memorial Day weekend in May, is similar—the city fills up and prices jump. Cherry Weekend in February is smaller but still pushes up Dupont rates. Federal holidays generally mean higher hotel occupancy across DC because of tourism; plan accordingly.
Late August and most of the fall and winter (outside of specific event weekends) offer the best pricing. January and February, if it's not Cherry Weekend, can be very cheap by DC standards.

Self-Catering Options
For longer stays, consider short-term rentals in Dupont, Logan Circle, or Shaw. They're usually better value than hotels for a week or more and give you more space. Capitol Hill, further east, is popular with gay men who work in government or law. It's worth knowing about for a longer stay, though it's less central to the bar scene.
Practical Notes
DC adds a hotel tax of about 14-15% on top of the room rate. Hotel parking in Dupont Circle runs $35-50 a night. If you're not renting a car, skip parking and use Metro and rideshares—it's much cheaper and usually faster. Reagan National Airport (DCA) is on the Blue and Yellow Metro lines, about 20 minutes to downtown. Dulles is further out and less convenient.
