Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (lgbtq+) people in the U.S. state of Florida may face legal challenges not experienced by non-lgbtq+ residents. Same-sex sexual activity became legal in the state after the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in Lawrence v. Texas on June 26, 2003, and same-sex marriage has been legal in the state since January 6, 2015. Discrimination on account of sexual orientation and gender identity in employment, housing and public accommodations is outlawed following the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling in Bostock v. Clayton County. In addition, several cities and counties, comprising about 55% of Florida's population, have enacted anti-discrimination ordinances. These include Jacksonville, Miami, Tampa, Orlando, St. Petersburg, Tallahassee and West Palm Beach, among others. Conversion therapy is also banned in a number of cities in the state, mainly in Palm Beach County and the Miami metropolitan area.
Florida is known for its vibrant lgbtq+Q+ community and hosts numerous gay events throughout the year. Here are some of the popular events that take place in different cities across the state:
- Miami Beach Gay Pride: Held annually in April, Miami Beach Gay Pride is a week-long celebration featuring a parade, live performances, parties, and community events. The parade, filled with colorful floats and enthusiastic participants, takes place along Ocean Drive, attracting both locals and visitors from around the world.
- Key West Pride: Key West, a renowned lgbtq+Q+ destination, hosts Key West Pride in June. This five-day festival includes a variety of events such as a street fair, pool parties, drag shows, and a Pride parade. The festive atmosphere and inclusive spirit make it a favorite among the lgbtq+Q+ community.
- St. Petersburg Pride: St. Petersburg Pride takes place in June and is one of the largest Pride events in Florida. It features a vibrant parade through downtown St. Petersburg, live entertainment, food vendors, art exhibits, and a family-friendly area. The event aims to promote equality and raise awareness about lgbtq+Q+ issues.
- Orlando Come Out With Pride: Held in October, Orlando Come Out With Pride celebrates diversity and inclusion in the lgbtq+Q+ community. The event includes a colorful parade, live performances, a marketplace showcasing local vendors, and a fireworks display. It attracts a large crowd, including people from neighboring cities.
- Fort Lauderdale Pride: Fort Lauderdale Pride is a two-day event held in February. It offers a range of activities, including a parade, live music, dance parties, and a beach festival. The event promotes unity and acceptance within the lgbtq+Q+ community and welcomes everyone to join in the celebration.
