Kansai Queer Film Festival 2025 is a landmark celebration of film and diversity, held across two Japanese cities. It is the longest‑running festival in the Kansai region dedicated to exploring lgbtq+Q+ themes and has been championing independent voices since its first edition in 2005. What began as a grassroots gathering has grown into a major cultural event that draws audiences from across Japan and beyond.

The 2025 programme will unfold over two weekends: Kyoto’s screenings take place from 28‑30 November at the Wings Kyoto gender equality centre, followed by the Osaka session from 5‑7 December at the Toyonaka Center for Gender Equality. Over six days the festival will showcase an eclectic mix of feature films, documentaries and shorts from Japan and overseas. All titles will be subtitled in Japanese so that local audiences can fully engage with the stories. Between films there are discussions with directors, workshops and panel sessions that encourage open dialogue about gender, sexuality and representation in cinema.

Organisers remain committed to reclaiming the word “queer” in a positive light. The programming focuses on stories that challenge stereotypes and highlight the diversity of lgbtq+Q+ life. By giving a platform to works that often struggle to find a place in mainstream distribution, the festival provides visibility to new voices and perspectives. The Kyoto session typically features international arthouse titles and local indie gems. During the Osaka dates the programme leans toward documentaries and community‑led projects, with special events exploring the intersections of queer identity and contemporary Japanese society.

Visitors are encouraged to explore the host cities between screenings. Kyoto’s historic streets and temples provide a striking backdrop for festival events, while Osaka’s vibrant neighborhoods offer a taste of modern urban culture. During the festival there will be pop‑up stalls selling zines and crafts, and informal gatherings where filmmakers mingle with fans. As the schedule may be subject to change, it is advisable to check the official festival website for the most current information and ticket details.
