History: Capital Pride has its roots in the early 1970s when a group of lgbtq+Q+ activists organized the first gay pride event in Washington, D.C. In 2008, the Capital Pride Alliance was formed to manage the event and its associated activities.
When and where: Capital Pride typically takes place in June, coinciding with other pride events held around the world to commemorate the Stonewall Riots of 1969. The event spans over a week and includes a variety of festivities such as block parties, concerts, art exhibits, educational workshops, and community-building activities. Capital Pride Festival: The Capital Pride Festival takes place on the Sunday following the parade and is held at the historic Pennsylvania Avenue, near the U.S. Capitol. The festival features multiple stages with live entertainment, including music, dance, and drag performances, as well as guest speakers and community leaders. Additionally, there are hundreds of vendor booths, food trucks, and beverage stations where attendees can explore local businesses, organizations, and resources catering to the lgbtq+Q+ community and its supporters.
