Capital Pride is an event that celebrates and shows support for the lgbtq+Q+ community in Washington, D.C. Its main goals are to promote visibility advocate for rights and recognize the achievements of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer individuals. The Capital Pride Alliance is the organization for orchestrating this event—a nonprofit dedicated to addressing the needs of the diverse lgbtq+Q+ community and its allies.

Historical Background; The roots of Capital Pride can be traced back to the 1970s when a group of lgbtq+Q+ activists came together to organize the gay pride gathering, in Washington, D.C. Since then this event has evolved significantly into a yearly celebration of lgbtq+Q+ culture and identity. In 2008 the Capital Pride Alliance was founded to manage this event and its related activities.

Timing and Location; Traditionally held in June alongside pride events that commemorate the Stonewall Riots of 1969 Capital Pride spans a week filled with various festivities. These include block parties, concerts, art displays, educational workshops and events that promote community connections. The highlight of these celebrations is marked by the Capital Pride Parade and Festival held over a weekend that draws thousands of participants each year.
The Capital Pride Parade is an event that brings together a diverse array of participants, including lgbtq+Q+ community groups, local businesses, political figures and allies. It winds through neighborhoods like Dupont Circle and Logan Circle showcasing the spirit of unity and acceptance that defines this celebration.

Following the parade the Capital Pride Festival takes place on Pennsylvania Avenue near the U.S. Capitol on Sunday. The festival features stages with entertainment such as music, dance performances, drag shows along with inspiring guest speakers and community leaders. Attendees can also explore vendor booths, food trucks and beverage stations to discover businesses and organizations supporting the lgbtq+Q+ community.
