Hamburg Pride 2025 Overview
Hamburg Pride, also known as Christopher Street Day (CSD) Hamburg, will return from July 26 to August 3, 2025. This major celebration of lgbtq+QIA+ rights and visibility transforms Germany’s port city into a diverse and welcoming festival. Organized by Hamburg Pride e.V., the week-long programme promotes equality, recognition and social acceptance, inviting queer people and allies to join numerous cultural events, discussions, demonstrations and celebrations.
Dates and Venues
The 2025 Pride Week officially opens on Saturday 26 July with a high-energy Pride Night at Kampnagel. The event, themed "We’re here to stay. Protect queer lives," includes performances, speeches and the annual Pride Award ceremony. Pride Week continues through Sunday 3 August, offering lectures, workshops and community meetings at the Pride House in St. Georg, integration and family centre events, and specially curated exhibitions at the Museum of Arts and Crafts.
Key Events
• Pride Night (26 July): This opening gala sets the tone for the celebration with live performances, speeches from activists, and presentation of the Pride Awards. Host Didine van der Platenvlotbrug welcomes queer artists such as BOVIY, Gino, and the Bengelsstimmen choir, with the show interpreted in German Sign Language. After the ceremony, the foyer transforms into a party space to celebrate the start of Pride Week.
• Pride House (27 July – 31 July): Throughout the week, the Pride House hosts readings, discussions and workshops tackling current lgbtq+QIA+ issues. This year, events expand into the Museum of Arts and Crafts, offering art exhibits and free admission. Pink Channel broadcasts interviews and reports from the venue.
• Rainbow Day Parade at Hamburger Dom (31 July): At the large Hamburger Dom funfair, colourful booths and carnival rides form the backdrop for a Rainbow Day Parade celebrating diversity. Samba group Sambahia leads participants around the fairground; after the parade, a get‑together with music takes place at the Biergarten Dock 12.
• CSD Street Fair (1 August – 3 August): For three days, downtown streets between Jungfernstieg and Ballindamm become a queer marketplace. Due to construction on Jungfernstieg, the festival spreads to Rathausmarkt and Bergstraße. Visitors can enjoy food stalls, community booths, live performances and information stands from local groups. Tickets for the Pink Pauli Party are available at the Pride tent.
• CSD Demonstration (2 August): The highlight of Pride Week is the CSD march on Saturday 2 August. People assemble on Mundsburger Damm before parading through Lange Reihe and Glockengießerwall to Mönckebergstraße. The demonstration’s motto underscores that queer people have always existed and deserve protection. Over 250,000 participants attended last year; similar numbers are expected in 2025. This parade honours the 1969 Stonewall uprising, which started modern lgbtq+Q+ rights movements.
• Pink Pauli Festival (2 August): After the demonstration, the Pink Pauli Festival offers the official closing celebration at Reeperbahn near Spielbudenplatz. With stages, DJ sets and entrance to 16 venues around the Kiez, it is considered Hamburg’s largest lgbtq+ party. Tickets start around 20 euros.
Theme and Mission
Each year, Hamburg Pride adopts a motto to highlight pressing community issues. In 2025, the slogan "We’re here to stay. Protect queer lives" emphasises the need for safety and recognition for queer people. The Pride association’s mission statement calls for equal rights, respect for individual identities and the celebration of diversity. Activities throughout the week encourage public discourse on topics such as intersectionality, trans rights, and queer families.
Travel and Practical Information
The Pride Week attracts visitors from across Germany and Europe. Public transport connects venues; U‑Bahn and S‑Bahn lines stop at Jungfernstieg near the street fair. For out‑of‑town visitors, Hamburg offers numerous hotels and guesthouses; early booking is recommended. The official event page (hamburg‑pride.de) and Hamburg Pride’s social media channels publish detailed schedules, accessibility information and updates.
History and Significance
Hamburg’s CSD began in 1980, making it one of Germany’s oldest pride events. It commemorates the New York Stonewall riots of 1969 when patrons of the Stonewall Inn resisted police raids. Since then, Hamburg Pride has grown into a week‑long series of cultural and political activities that champion lgbtq+QIA+ visibility and rights. With tens of thousands of participants annually, the event demonstrates solidarity and celebrates diversity, while advocating against discrimination and violence.
