Gran Canaria runs on a different schedule than most gay destinations. The sauna scene here isn't the main attraction—that title goes to the Maspalomas dunes, the gay beach at Kiosco 7, and the legendary Yumbo Centre where 30-plus gay bars pack into one shopping complex. But after a day in the sun and before hitting the bars around midnight, or when you want something beyond the endless cruising opportunities, the island's sole remaining sauna offers a different pace.
Sauna Portugal sits in Las Palmas, the island's capital on the northern end, about a 30-minute drive from Playa del Inglés where most tourists stay. Located just one block from Las Canteras beach on Calle Portugal, it opens daily from 4 PM to 11 PM—notably early closures compared to mainland European saunas, but Gran Canaria's scene operates differently. The place draws mostly local Canarian men, though tourists who make the trip north find a warmer, more authentic vibe than what they'd get in the resort areas.
The facility spreads across two floors with everything you'd expect: Finnish sauna, steam room, dark rooms, private cabins, locker facilities, showers, even glory holes and a sling room after recent renovations. The bar serves drinks and snacks. Entry runs 16 euros normally, dropping to 12 on Wednesdays for customer appreciation day. Towels, slippers, and cabin use come included. The last Saturday of each month brings a free buffet, which always pulls a crowd.
What happened to the other saunas? Maspalomas used to have several operating simultaneously—Sauna Heroes at Yumbo Centre, Sauna Construction at Cita Centre, another on the Sandia Centre rooftop, Sauna Nilo. All closed in recent years. The abundance of cruising alternatives probably played a role: clothing-optional beaches, men-only resort pools (day passes available), the famous dunes after dark, and multiple cruise bars in Yumbo with dark rooms and mazes made dedicated saunas less essential.
Gran Canaria hosts two major Pride celebrations annually, which sounds excessive until you understand the island draws year-round gay tourism. Maspalomas Pride runs for ten days in early May, typically May 1-11, with the massive parade down Avenida de Tirajana on the second Saturday. Floats carry international DJs, drag queens in theatrical costumes, dancers in beachwear, and activists waving rainbow flags against backdrops of palm trees and resort hotels. The parade ends at Yumbo Centre where a main stage dominates the central courtyard for a week of performances.
Winter Pride happens November 10-16, attracting over 40,000 visitors who voted it their favorite European Pride festival. Despite the name, temperatures hit 23°C during the day. The Vengaboys headlined 2025. Pool parties at Axel Beach Hotel, the Wet & White party at Amadores Beach Club, Mad Bear Beach events, and the T-Dance closing party at Seven Hotel fill the week. Everything centers on Yumbo again, with a VIP platform if you want dedicated bathrooms and a private bar away from the crowds.
Bear Carnival descends in early April (moved from March to avoid conflicting with regular Carnival), bringing Europe's largest bear gathering to the island for ten days. Over 40 events include pool parties, fetish nights, beach gatherings, and bear competitions. Bärenhöhle bar in Yumbo becomes ground zero, decorated floor to ceiling with hundreds of teddy bears.
Maspalomas Fetish Week (rebranded as Fetish Pride in 2022) takes over in early October for ten days celebrating leather, rubber, puppy play, uniforms, sportswear—basically every tribe under the fetish umbrella. Thousands arrive in gear, the cruise bars add special theme nights, and the Mr. Fetish Gran Canaria competition crowns the island's hottest kinkster.
Carnival itself runs mid-March with parades, drag queen galas, and street parties. The Drag Queen Gala at Yumbo on the final Thursday attracts competitors from across Spain battling for the title in spectacular costumes and performances.

Calling Yumbo Centre a "shopping mall" undersells it completely. This four-level open-air complex built in an old quarry became the unlikely epicenter of gay nightlife in Gran Canaria. Over 30 gay bars circle the central courtyard, creating possibly the easiest bar-hopping experience on Earth. You can hit six venues without walking more than 50 meters.
Spartacus, Adonis, Mardi Gras, and Fiction offer terrace seating perfect for warm Canary evenings and people-watching. WunderBar draws crowds for Eurovision nights and cocktails. Sparkles Show Bar runs award-winning drag performances nightly at 11 PM after karaoke at 9. Terry's showcases Spanish drag acts. Bar Junior keeps things intimate with specialty cocktails and friendly staff. Copacabana, which opened in 2023, partners with major events like Winter Pride and Fetish Pride.
Cruising bars operate later: Noxon, Cruisebar, Zoo, and Mykonos all feature dark rooms and mazes. The Hole, a two-floor fetish bar with 300 square meters of space, offers slings, private cabins, and multiple theme nights including underwear, naked, and fetish dress codes. Mantrix operates as the main late-night dance club, busiest after 3:30 AM once other bars close.
The Six Pack Zone clusters six venues in the northwest corner of floor one, popular early evening before crowds migrate elsewhere. Bärenhöhle (Bear Cave) caters specifically to bears and admirers from 7:30 PM to 2:30 AM, with happy hour until 9 PM.
Because Gran Canaria enjoys eternal sunshine, Yumbo stays active year-round. But it peaks during the major events—Pride weeks, Carnival, Bear gatherings, Fetish Pride. The place transforms from busy to absolutely packed, with the central stage hosting international performers and the surrounding bars extending hours and adding special programming.
The practical reality: most visitors stay in Playa del Inglés within walking distance of Yumbo. The gay beach sits 15 minutes away. The famous dunes for sunset cruising require maybe a 20-minute stroll. Sauna Portugal up in Las Palmas demands a taxi or bus trip, making it more of an intentional excursion than a spontaneous stop. But if you want to meet local men rather than tourists, experience traditional Canarian hospitality, and see a side of Gran Canaria beyond the resort bubble, the journey north delivers something Yumbo's commercial energy can't quite match.
