Cape Town's Mother City Queer Project (MCQP) has grown from a small themed costume party in 1994 into South Africa's biggest dress to theme celebration. In 2025 the party returns to Cape Town for its 31st edition, bringing a new theme and a new venue to be announced. While the exact dates are still to be confirmed, organisers traditionally stage the event on the second weekend of December and the weekend has become a highlight of the summer season and one of the city's signature lgbtq+Q+ celebrations.

Each year MCQP sets a different creative challenge for attendees with costumes, stage sets, light shows and guest DJs. Past themes like “Bollywood,” “The Love Ball” and “Drag Race” have attracted thousands of party‑goers who spend weeks designing outfits. The event blends elements of a music festival, circuit party, burlesque cabaret, drag variety show and circus to create an immersive, day‑into‑night experience. Over 10,000 locals and visitors typically attend, drawn by world‑class entertainment and the chance to connect with Cape Town's vibrant queer community.

The 2025 venue has not yet been confirmed, but previous editions have transformed spaces like Gardens Commercial High School into an otherworldly escape with multiple dancefloors and themed performance zones. Whichever location is chosen, expect the organisers to once again create a visually spectacular environment filled with bespoke décor and state‑of‑the‑art sound and lighting.

Cape Town is renowned as the ‘Gay Capital of Africa’. Many party‑goers base themselves in De Waterkant, the city's colourful ‘Pink District’ lined with bars, restaurants and shops. Green Point, just a few minutes away, offers additional nightlife and party vibe. Beyond the party, visitors can explore Cape Town's beaches, Table Mountain, vineyards and nearby winelands, making MCQP the anchor for a summer holiday in one of the world's most lgbtq+Q‑friendly cities.

For updates on the 2025 theme, venue and ticket information, keep an eye on the organisers' announcements. The Mother City Queer Project is more than a party: it is a celebration of self‑expression, creativity and community that has been central to Cape Town's queer culture for over three decades.
