Can there be anything worse than planning a trip, waiting in anticipation until you finally get to go away, arrive and then – ending up getting terribly sick instead? I don’t think so. The whole point of a trip is to feel good, not bad. Unfortunately, it’s an all-too-common occurrence that many travelers get sick. But many issues are easily avoidable – as long as you have the right knowledge. Thankfully, we’re happy to impart that knowledge for you right here.
Forget Immune Boosters

For starters, don’t waste your money on these so-called “immune boosters”. As tempting as it is to stock up on them as they promise to protect you from colds and flus, the truth is there’s not a whole lot of research to back up their effectiveness. So save your money.

Never mind Vitamins

Here’s another one not to bother with: over-the-counter vitamins. Rumor has it that loading up on vitamin C and zinc will improve your immune system, but again, the jury is still out on the scientific proof. So far, very little benefit has been shown to make it worth your while, or dollar.

Train For Travel

The best and most trusted way to prep your immune system for whatever your travels may throw at it is to simply train. It’s almost as if you’re preparing for a marathon. Getting in shape for your trip will give you much better chances of fighting off anything you may catch, than not exercising at all.

Eat Lots Of Fruits And Veggies

If you were planning on buying vitamins at your pharmacy, here’s a better option: good old fruits and veggies. They have all the vitamins you need, and, they help balance your diet. And it’s a good idea to go into a vacation balanced, as you never know what gourmet delights your trip will throw at you.

Get Your Flu Shot

Sorry all you anti-vacciners, you should really get your flu shot before you take-off. First off, it’s not true that getting the flu shot gives you the flu. Second, you may be going to an area in the world that’s high in exactly the type of flu this year’s flu shot was designed to protect you against.

Wash Your Hands For 20 Seconds

This is a no-brainer, but when away (or at home) wash your hands. Hopefully you’ve been doing this already for all of your life. But what many don’t know is washing for 20-seconds is key. That’s about how long it takes to get rid of all the bacteria and germs that is likely soaking into your skin.

Don’t Touch Door Handles

The more “germ traps” you can avoid, the better. We all have to touch sink faucets, toilet levers, and door handles. These are the usual suspects where most catch something nasty. But if you use a paper towel, then you don’t have to touch these disgusting things again, thus, no longer get sick because of them.

Drink Less Alcohol

Many still don’t know that alcohol is an immunosuppressant. For those that don’t know what that word is – it means that it weakens the part of your body that’s built for fighting off bacteria and infections. When traveling, you want to have the strongest immune system possible. So lay off the alcohol as much as you can.

Disinfect Airline Tray Table

Airline tray tables. Did you know some people actually change their kid’s diapers on them? Did you also know that the flight staff rarely cleans them between flights? Are you sick to your stomach yet? No? Good. Keep it that way by disinfecting them as soon as you board.

Try Wearing A Mask

Ok, so it doesn’t go well with your outfit. But far too many people get sick on the plane on the way to their destination because of the recycled air. This means they land sick, and stay sick the entire trip. If you’re one of those people that already has a weakened immune system due to chronic illness or age, then it might be in your best interest to wear a mask during your flight.
