Hotspot Description:
Germany's premier department store Inarguably one of Berlin's main attractions, KaDeWe would rank as Europe's largest department store were it not for Harrods in London. With its seven floors of designer fashions, household necessities and luxuries, ever reliable eateries and expansive and delectable two-floor food halls, the store draws anywhere from 40,000 to 50,000 visitors daily. And to boot it's located just minutes from Schöneberg's gay establishments. KaDeWe is an abbreviation of 'Kaufhaus des Westens', which translates as 'Department Store of the West'. Adolf Jandorf opened the store in 1905, selling it in 1927. KaDeWe suffered major bombing during the Second World War, then greatly reinvented and expanded. In 1994 it was acquired by KarstadtQuelle (now Arcandor), whose many other business include the decent Karstardt chain of clothing stores. U-
