Bode-Museum

Address:
2 Am Kupfergraben,Berlin,10117,Germany
Hotspot Description:
Sculptures, paintings and coins A striking and grandly domed neoclassical structure perched above the Spree on Berlin's Museumsinsel (Museum Island), the elegant and fluid Bode houses exquisite collections of sculptures – including Late Gothic works by Tilman Riemenschneider – and great works of Byzantine, Renaissance and Baroque art, not to mention an unrivalled numismatic collection. Opened in 1904 and designed by Ernst von Ihne, the museum suffered damage during the Second World War. In 2006 it reopened in its entirety following decades of part-closure, renovation and restoration. Old Masters from the Gemäldegalerie are due to be moved here. Originally called the Kaiser Friedrich-Museum but changed to Wilhelm von Bode in 1956 in honour of its first curator. Very good café too. Opens late Thursday, as with several of the other local museums. S-Bahns: Friedrichstraße and Hackescher Markt.
