An impressive and unique permanent collection of documents covering more than 200 years of gay history. The Schwules Musuem features an exhibition space, an archive and a library exploring homosexuality in all its facets, including documentation of personal experiences, all available for personal and professional research. Temporary exhibitions showcase works from artists, philosophers and historians. The museum was founded in in the mid-1980s in Kreuzberg by three gay students – Manfred Baumgardt, Andreas Sternweiler und Wolfgang Theis, with Egmonth Fassbinder and Manfred Herzer on board soon after – and in 1987 staged its first exhibition in Friedrichstraße. In 1988 the musuem settled on a permanent home at Mehringdamm 61 in Kreuzberg, but on 17 May 2013 opened at its new location at Lützowstraße 73 in Schöneberg, near Nollendorfplatz U-Bahn. Closed Tuesday.
