Antiquity reconstructed, and popular too One of the five great museums on Berlin's Museumsinsel (Museum Island) — making for ever so easy art-hopping — the Pergamon was built between 1910 and 1930 and houses giants of antiquity such as the Pergamon Altar (2nd century BC), the Ishtar Gate (ca 575 BC) and the Market Gate of Miletus (2nd century AD ), rebuilt by Germans from parts excavated in the Middle East. Officially the Pergamom houses the Collection of Classical Antiquities, the Museum of the Ancient Near East and the Museum of Islamic Art.
