Goldmine of 13th- to 18th-century paintingsOh yes, this is very good. One of the continent's more impressive and comprehensive collections of European art, the Gemäldegalerie straddles six centuries, with works by Fra Angelico, Lippi, Dürer, Cranach, Holbein, van der Weyden, van Eyck, Raphael, Titian, Caravaggio, Rubens, Rembrandt, Vermeer and Gainsborough. The collection, started in 1830, moved to its current central spot in Berlin's postwar, Berlin Wall-instigated Kulturforum arts zone in 1998. Designed by Heinz Hilmer and Christoph Sattler, the low-level and unobtrusive concrete and glass structure practically melts into the expansive piazza entrance in front, and belies the airy high-ceilinged spaces within. However, with an extension planned for neighbouring Neue Nationalgalerie [see entry], Old Masters from the Gemäldegalerie are due to be moved to the Bode Museum temporarily. Opens late Thursday, as with several of the other local museums.
