19th-century Berlin art landmark with modern touches Since its reopening in 2009, following massive and elegant restoration and reinvention by British architect David Chipperfield, the previously war-ravaged and part-dormant Neues Museum has emerged as one of Berlin's de rigueur tourist destinations. Originally designed by Friedrich August Stüler (1800–65), the formidable neoclassical structure now houses the Egyptian Museum — including the ever-popular bust of Queen Nefertiti, moved from Charlottenburg where it had lived since 1967 — and the Papyrus Collection and the Museum of Prehistory and Early History, together with artefacts from the Collection of Classical Antiquities. The museum sits perpendicular to the Alte Nationalgalerie on Berlin's Museumsinsel (Museum Island). Opens late Thursday, as with several of the other local museums. U-Bahn: Friedrichstraße.
